Consulting

My typical work consulting for comapnies or grants comes in experimental AR advertising assets and testing. I have experience with both time and location based AR campaign development. Either Snapchat or Instagram are possible modalities, generally we go Snapchat for the affordances or Instagram for the reach.

About Me

I am an associate professor of social media in the New Media department in the School of Communication at Oregon State University.

As an administrator I have program lead (chair) of New Media since 2016 and Director of the Game Lab since 2012. Institutionally, I am co-chair of General Education at Oregon State University.

Here I am.

Generativism

Dynamic methods are the future. Communication research is complex and complicated. Much of what we see in social media should be understood as speech, this is especially clear with the decline of Facebook and the rise of TikTok and Reels. What are the youths doing? Literally watching and responding public speeches, taking part in debates, and cooridnating the performance of physical bodies (especially dancing). Theory sets from performance, theatre, dance, and public speaking have much to say about social media today as they can describe how dynamic agents interact. Reconciling creative arts, social science, and formal science with the humanities is the future trajectory of the university.

Teaching Philosophy

I really enjoy teaching and working with undergraduate students. My approach to teaching is a paraphrase of an idea from classic PBS program This Old House:The right experience, for a particular group of students, in the modality they are learning. I am also committee to open educational resoruces, my free texbook New Media Futures might be helpful as are all my Cultural Analytics code assets (click the github button) for the classroom which are updated annually.

(Marty has just put his 1985 Nikes back on. He looks around, and sees a dog being walked - by a robotic lead. Marty stares at it, and then gets up to have a closer look at it. He walks down the street. Biff gets into the DeLorean and unseen by Marty, takes off, although he crashes into some boxes first.) (McFly Residence – Kitchen) (Lorraine is making dinner. She opens the pizza.) Marty Jr.(o.s) Hey, pizza! (o.s) Alright, just wait.
