Introduction to New Media at Oregon State is a course designed as the start of a sequence that connects the three areas of our program:

New Media Futures

Futures begins where Intro ends. Students learn the basics of elemental media with a special emphasis on the physics, biology, and chemistry of media. From this point, we provide the students with a strong foundation in basic semiotic and narrative theory, before ending with a unit on research methods. After twenty weeks of basic courses students should understand how media work, why they have meaning, when certain kinds of make money, where the government regulates media, and most importantly how to ask new, provocative questions.

Survey of Social Media

Survey of Social Media covers the basic history of social network sites and business models for social networks. After this introduction, students are introduced to a taxonomy that breaks social networks into different types depending on their core logics: affinity, temporality, location, and creativity. The networks covered in this class change almost every quarter depending on trends and available research. The core networks discussed in each version of this course have been: Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Pinterest. Others come and go.

Social Media Strategy

Social Media Strategy is a small course taught annually in the spring for students who have completed Survey of Social Media. Students participtae in four simulation games, some of which unfold over a number of weeks to better understand social networks and probabilistic thinking.

Small Screens

This platform specific course is a hands on exploration of the use of mobile devices and development for smartphones, with a particular empahsis on app design and basic mobile development and xcode.

Capstone

Professors in the New Media unit at Oregon State work with students on research in this highly focused course. Students in my version of the course work on cultural analytics and social network analysis.
